Rings and amulets by themselves are little more than vain decorations, often studded with exquisite gems and laced with exotic metals. Over time however, the mage-clans of the East discovered a way to enchant jewelry, enabling the wearer with special powers and abilities. However, the magic contained within each ring or amulet was so great that only one could be worn on each hand for fear of magical conflict. They take up a 1x1 slot in the inventory, and because of their small size, strategic placement on the hands and neck, and powerful preservative magic, they cannot be damaged in combat.

Jewelry can possess some of the most potent magical modifiers in the game, and the promise of Rare jewelry is a tasty thought indeed.  There are known to be Unique and Item Set rings and amulets as well.

Graphics for rings and amulets are improved in Diablo, with more variety, and brighter colors.  It is not known if the different graphics for these items have any connection to the modifiers that can be found on them, but it seems reasonable.
