Sapphires

Sapphires are blue, and as you might guess, they are cold gems.  As with other cold attacks in Diablo II, the damage is lower than other forms of elemental magic, especially fire and lightning, but the added chilling property is very valuable, though the target is not always chilled, just some of the time.  It is unknown if higher quality sapphires increase the % chance of chilling, but it seems likely.  However there are no sapphire gems that will freeze a target, only chill it for a longer period.  The duration of the chill is likely increased by higher levels of sapphires as well as the % chance of chilling, but this is not displayed in the hover info, and will need to be tested ingame to be determined.

Sapphires are okay in a helm, mainly for a Necromancer or Sorceress who needs some more mana.  They are okay in shields also, with the cold resistance, and possibly shortening the freeze duration.  More testing is needed on this.  However they are exceptionally useful in a weapon, adding the chilling effect to most attacks, which is very helpful in slowing down your enemy.

  • "Normal" gems are just referred to by the gem's name, so a normal sapphire would say "sapphire" when hovered on, not "normal sapphire."
  • All gems require 1x1 space in the inventory, and can not be stacked.
  • The numerical info on modifiers is mostly estimated now, but is very close to exact. Most gems have an allowed range each, such as 10-14%, so expect some variation.
