Introduction | Act I | Act II | Act
III | Act IV |
Interacting With Townsfolk (NPCs) Interacting with townsfolk is important in Diablo II. They tell you about
relevant events and people in the world of Sanctuary, and some offer goods or
services to assist you in your adventures. Urgent News - An NPC with an
exclamation point (!) overhead has urgent news for you. Usually, the news is
important information about completing your quests and advancing in the game.
You should approach and talk to any townsfolk with an "!" overhead.
Unlike the selection of only 6 or 7 NPCs in the original Diablo, Diablo II will
feature far, far more people to interact and talk with. There will be four
towns, each encompassing its own set of NPCs. NPCs will be limited down to three
different functions in Diablo II.
The first will be to buy, repair, and sell
equipment from you. Merchants will each feature their own set of wares, some
specifying in magical armour perhaps, while others sell mainly magical items.
Shop around and you may find a better bargain elsewhere. An NPC in each Act will
sell you mercenaries with differing abilities, much like items on sale at the
merchant's shop. Blacksmiths in each Act will be able to repair items for you,
but the game dynamics this time around require that the higher, magical items
will require a fortune to repair.
The second major function NPCs will do is supply
you with quests and information pertaining to quests. Quests provide players
with new locations to explore, more experience to gain, and the major quests go
towards finishing the game. However, if you find you cannot complete a certain
quest for a NPC, don't be surprised to find his or her attitude towards you
changing.
The last important thing that NPCs do is help you
in combat. There will be some guards in towns to ward off nearby monsters, but
there are other NPCs that you will be able to hire to bring along on your
excursions. These NPCs will follow you around, helping to fight monsters for
you. You cannot directly control them, and they die just as easily as you
do. Act
