Coldworm the Burrower

Wandering through the narrow, circular caves of the Maggot Lair in Act II, one would wonder who sort of vile creature would be large enough to create the vast network of underground corridors. The answer lies at the bottom of the lair in level 3, half buried in the sand. Coldworm the Burrower is, literally, the mother of all Sand Maggots.

Because venturing into the Maggot Lair is essential to recovering the Staff of Kings, players will need to face off against this monstrous insect before they can recover the staff. This demon, along with the staff, is always in a northern room, with a corridor leading from the southeast. Not only is the Maggot Queen in a stationary position, she has no attacks of her own. However, it is easy to dismiss her ability to spawn out Sand Maggots from her rear end. Once she detects players nearby, she will start laying out full grown Maggots; these in turn, will produce Maggot eggs, which then quickly morph into Baby Maggots. While there are only a limited amount of Maggots she can produce, the ones that appear are quite enough to completely full the small room, and pack the narrow corridor outside for good measure. It is very difficult, to say the least, to fight through the sea of Maggots to reach her.

Once you do clear out the room, Coldworm has no defenses left, and you can beat on her with ease. However, once she dies, she lets out a damaging Frost Nova, followed by an enormous explosion of poisonous gibbets from her corpse. Any players caught in the blast will suffer some serious damage.
